India, New Delhi, - 1967 Anupam Sud graduated from the College of Art, New Delhi, in 1967 and was the youngest member of Group 8, an association of artists at the college founded by her teacher, Jagmohan Chopra. Sud joined the Slade School of Art in England in 1971 where her sensibility and approach to printmaking underwent a radical change.

Sud’s preference for the labour-intensive technique of printmaking hints at her aesthetic disposition. Her works focus on the human body that is exposed, stark and palpable and follows a consistent, logical trajectory where she melds historic, religious and mythical references to personal memory with her current concerns. In the late Seventies, Sud’s work showed a preoccupation with the feminine subject, exploring women’s deprivation and exploitation and subtly exploring the nature of her psyche.

Her art practice reveals the consistent use of certain spatial devices, such as a niche, a window, an architectural element, or sometimes, compartmentalised frames within a pictorial frame. Also a painter in acrylic, it is her intaglio prints that have established her reputation as one of India’s foremost practicing printmakers. Widely exhibited, Sud has participated in several group shows in India and abroad.
